Welcome to Hurricane Season 2018! Guess I missed the first spinner as I was off the grid down in the islands for the week, but it looks like it didn’t produce much on our coast or there’s to write home about on the coconut telegraph. It’s a start, we are officially there, and for the past 2 years we’ve had a jump start for the season with an early named storm! The initial forecasts for the season have changed slightly over the last couple of weeks, but some of the leading experts are declaring that it should be a fairly average season with 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 2 major storms! Hopefully… Mother Nature gives us a little break this year after the last 2 years of scares on the First Coast and steers them clear just within our swell window to get some great surf! We also hope that everyone got out to get some tax-free hurricane prep in ahead of time, because I think we all have learned our lessons with what can happen on a retail level over the last 2 years as well! After a couple months of non-stop surf, we’ve officially hit flat season… Huge High Pressure system called a “ring of fire” is dominating the middle of the country this week, and the hot southwesterly flows begin to steam in from the Gulf. Now is the time to get your early summer logging gear dusted off, or get to your favorite local surf shop or shaper to get that new small wave board ordered. It’s going to be as flat as flat in a long time this week, but at least that’s good for the mini-groms at surf camps! Nothing really on the horizon yet either.. Maybe time to book a good surf trip, just be careful heading to Nica anytime soon. Most of our activity this time of year will peer into the Gulf and as the season heats up will shift our eyes off Africa to watch the elephants come marching in! Fasten your seat-belts, it’s going to be another crazy summer!
