St. Simons Island local, Matt Kuchar has been around the world of golf for quite some time. The former two-time All-American on the golf team for Georgia Tech won the US Amateur in ‘97 before turning pro in 2000. While he admittedly struggled when first turning pro, a change to his swing in 2008 has helped him become one of the most consistent golfers on tour today.
The runner up to Bubba Watson’s win at the Masters in 2012 put him on pace to hold off Rickie Fowler at THE PLAYERS to secure his most significant victory to date. And when the purse at THE PLAYERS is the largest in all of golf, that’s a pretty profitable course to secure your first win at.
However, it’s not all about golfing for Kuchar. On a recent trip to China, he took the family out with Olympian Michael Phelps so they could exchange tips in their respective sports both on the course and in the pool. Kuchar is also heavily involved in various charities such as Aid Still Required for continued relief efforts in Haiti and Unicef’s Whatever it Takes that aims to stop preventable deaths in children. Here’s some insight as to Kuchar’s life off the course and who he thinks will win at THE PLAYERS in 2013…
Who is a pro athlete that you enjoy the most?
I grew up wanting to be “Magic” Johnson. He was so entertaining, so fun. I loved to see him out on the court.
If you could have one meal, what would that be?”
It might have to start with pancakes. I love pancakes with maple syrup. And it might have to finish with a filet… a big one. It would be tough to have to choose either the pancakes or the filet so I think I’d have to have both. It’ll be a big meal.
You weren’t in the Golf Boys video, but if you could choose your own Golf Boy Band, who would you choose to be in your group and why?
I’d like to take this opportunity to announce that I will become the fifth member of the Golf Boys. Just kidding.
After you won THE PLAYERS last year, what’s the first thing you and family did?
We had dinner that night in THE PLAYERS grill room in the clubhouse. It was just me and the family. It was a special time.
What is the biggest “for fun” purchase you made with your earnings?
We (the family) took a vacation to Baker’s Bay down in the Bahamas. It was a fun, rewarding trip.
What’s your favorite hole at TPC Sawgrass?
My favorite hole is the 18th hole, for sure. The 18th at Sawgrass is one of the best holes in golf.
Who do you predict will win THE PLAYERS (besides yourself)?
I’ll say Lee Westwood. He’s got a good game, and he’s playing some good golf.
