10615386_725362954186157_2828703527108679062_nThe University of North Florida Surf Team is back in season, ready to dominate, and do some “shoeys” along the way. With so many new groms on the team, and a solid group of older guys, we can expect a great season to come. A new secret weapon has appeared this year to lead them to success, “Shoey the Bear.” He is a master at pulling chicks, doing shoeys, and having an all around good time.

*If you don’t know what a shoey is, try Googling it. You will soon realize why the team is ready to win Nationals this season! IMG_4548

The team claimed their first win of the season, on Sunday, September 14. The conditions were practically flat, which is normally unheard of for the New Smyrna Beach Inlet. Luckily, a few ankle biters snuck through to play on and allowed the team to prove they can surf anything. The day was filled with standout performances on such minimal conditions. The best wave of the day went to a shovelhead shark that the team was sharing the line-up with. To no surprise, New Smyrna proved once again why the legendary break is called “Shark Shallows.”

A huge congrats goes to Piper Austin for winning first place in the Women’s Shortboard division, as a freshman. Also, Pat Nichols for winning first in the Men’s Longboard division. The Men’s Shortboard finals were stacked with five out of the six competitors being from UNF.

Standout results for UNF:

The season is already looking very promising. The UNF Surf Team is stoked to represent Jacksonville, and we are excited to see what they will live up to this year. Last year, the A team placed fourth at Nationals. Can the team bring home first to Jacksonville this year?
