It may be the beginning of a new era in the River City Rumble.

The UNF Ospreys opened A-Sun conference play with a convincing win over their cross-town rival, the JU Dolphins, to claim their third-straight win over JU on Saturday at the Veteran’s Memorial Arena. UNF trailed much of the first half before grabbing a 35-31 lead with a 10-2 run to end the half. A 9-0 run to start the eventual 51-point half made it a 13-point game, a lead that would hold throughout the remainder of the game.

These two teams are on different spectrums, with UNF (9-9) expected to compete for the A-Sun title and JU in full rebuild mode, a far cry from the 1-13 mark the Ospreys had verse JU before 2011. This is the third-straight win against the Dolphins, the longest streak in school history and improves them to 5-2 against them since 2011.

“Our focus has been to be 1-0 in every game we play in the conference so we accomplished that goal today. It was great to see the guys execute our game plan exactly how we prepared. We need to enjoy this and then get refocused again for the next one,” said UNF’s head coach Matthew Driscoll. Dallas Moore had 20 points and continues his season of impressive play. It would not be surprising for him to receive A-Sun player of the year consideration. Local Ponte Vedra product, Beau Beech, added 17 points and five steals. Their next game is against pre-season conference favorite, Florida Gulf Coast, at the UNF arena Wednesday night. The game will be the first game from UNF arena  available for streaming on ESPN 3.

UNF will look to improve to 2-0 in conference play, coming into the JU game they had lost 6 of 8. A win of FGCU, the only team picked before UNF in conference for the preseason rankings, may continue a groundbreaking season.
