The Ospreys took part in their biggest regular season game in school history. They did not blink and defeated Florida Gulf Coast 76-62, ending Gulf Coast’s 10-game win streak. The win moved them ahead of FGCU for first place in the Atlantic Sun and a win over last place Stetson at home on Saturday, will give them home-court advantage through the A-Sun tournament, as well as giving them a NIT berth.
Beau Beech had 22 points and 13 rebounds, going 5 for 9 from behind the arc. Demarcus Daniels added 15 points off the bench.
“I thought our guys really just played fantastic. For a stretch in the second half we seemed to be trading baskets with them and I thought we would just need to keep scoring to win, but our guys dug down and did a great job of getting stops down the stretch which allowed us to open up the lead,” said coach Driscoll, who is looking for a regular season title for his first time.
To date, this has been the most successful season in school history. The 11-2 in conference record trumps the school’s previous best, which was 10-8. They have secured home games throughout the A-Sun tournament, given that they advance. The games are scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, which will be the first playoff game at home in UNF history.
ESPN analyst Dick Vitale was at the game on Wednesday night, a native of the Tampa area, and was promoting his new book after being “impressed” by FGCU recently. Due to their run a couple years ago, FGCU gets most of the national attention and is ranked in the mid-majors poll ahead of UNF.
