Local longboard master Justin Quintal continued his nearly decade-long domination of the Vans Duct Tape Invitational, taking first place this weekend in China. Over the course of close to 15 years, Joel Tudor’s traveling classic longboard roadshow, the DTI, has grown from an intimate gathering of individualistic longboard stylists to one of the most celebrated events in all of surfdom–and certainly the biggest contest in all of longboarding. After receiving a wild card invitation to the Virginia Beach DTI in 2012 and proceeding to essentially come from nowhere to win the event at the famed Steel Pier, Quintal’s win in Hainan, China makes eight wins for the Jax Beach loc-dawg (out of 17 total events, some of which Quintal did not attend). The North Florida native took out longboard heavies from across the globe, including Australia’s Harrison Roach, California’s Alex Knost, Zach Flores, and recent Duct Tape winner Andy Nieblas.

Quintal will return to North Florida a richer man. And deservedly so–he’s one of the hardest working surfers in the game, traveling nonstop on a ceaseless search for waves up and down the East Coast and beyond. Check out the video below from our Outdoors Issue to bare witness to JQuinny’s skill on all manner of craft, as well as his surf-crazed lunacy.
