The Saint Augustine Aquarium is slated to open in 2015. Local residents, Shawn and Kathy Heister, donated the land and funding to get the project started at Riberia Point, on the South end of historic St. Augustine. In addition, a RocketHub campaign has been launched to seek the additional funding needed to complete the newest aquarium in America, in the oldest city in America. With a donation of $50, you will get a free admission pass. For $150, you can “Adopt an Animal” at the aquarium, including the Green Moray eel, the Atlantic octopus and the Cownose ray.
The project will launch in two phases, with phase one set to begin construction in June 2014. The St. Augustine Aquarium has partnered with marine biology programs at multiple universities. One of the highlights of their exhibits will feature shark life on the coast of North Florida. The opening in early 2015 is planned to coincide with the 450th anniversary of Saint Augustine.
