Big changes are underway for Marvel Comics. The once strapping and bearded Thunder God, Thor, will now be a buxom blonde in a caped costume. The major shift in Marvel’s continuity was revealed on The View Tuesday morning. The character will be separate from the man who had previously been Thor, the title held in the Marvel Universe designated by whomever holds the hammer, Mjolnir.
In a statement by series writer, Jason Aaron, he said,” This is not a She-Thor, this is not a Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is Thor. This is the Thor of the Marvel Universe.”
The original Thor, was created in 1962 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby. His story brings him to Earth to learn the meaning of humility as an ordinary human being. After holding the hammer he regains his power. The character would eventually become a founding member of the Avengers, and is played by actor Chris Hemsworth in the Marvel movie. However, this new character will officially take Thor’s name as her own this fall.
The publisher said it hoped recasting Thor would attract more woman and girls to superhero comic books. Thor is the latest in the ever-growing and long list of female-centric titles that continues to invite new readers to the comic. She will be the eighth title to feature a lead female protagonist alongside others such as Black Widow and Storm. The new Thor will be on newsstands this October.
