The 2013 BET Hip-Hop Awards, hosted by “Uncle Snoop”, begin today at 9 p.m. Yesterday, BET released videos on their website of the 2013 Cypher lineup, which featured seven various groups and conglomerations from the Hip-Hop community. For those who are asking themselves what a cypher is, a cypher is similar to a rap battle, but instead of two rappers taking turns making shots at each other, a cypher consists of several rappers freestyling one after the other, in a cypher. This year’s Cypher lineup consists of current hip-hop greats such as Slaughterhouse, a hip hop supergroup of rappers Crooked I, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, and Royce da 5’9″, another group of members from the A$AP MOB,  Action Bronson, and a comedy supergroup called  Real Husbands of Hollywood featuring Chocolate Drop aka Kevin Hart and Nick Cannon. The undisputed winner of 2013’s cyper is easily Kendrick Lamar, who just won Lyricist of the Year and Album of the Year, and his crew from Top Dawg Entertainment consisting of Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and Isaiah Radhad.

“Yeah, and nothing’s been the same since they dropped ‘Control’ / And tucked a sensitive rapper back in his pajama clothes / Ha ha. Joke’s on you!”

K.Dot and his crew stole the show with a series of stunning freestyles that included a diss verse about the Canadian-rapper Drake. Since the video was released, it has been soaring around the internet stirring up controversy in its wake from fans of both T.D.E. and Drake. I think BET already had a feeling the lyric was going stir up some trouble however, just moments before K.Dot began his freestlye,  BET posted the hashtag “#KendricksVerse,”  on screen and requested that fans tweet their reactions to the video. #KendricksVerse quickly became a trending topic as more and more viewers jumped into the brawl. This wasn’t the only controversial verse from Lamar. “I got my thumb on hip-hop and my foot in the back of yo ass / Aftermath get the last laugh,” stated Lamar as he continued his relentless onslaught of his music contemporaries.

Let’s see how the pajama-wearing, sensitive Drake reacts to the cypher after it has stirred up so much publicity since its release. My guess is he won’t have much to say. Just bend the knee to King Kendrick and surrender already. Watch the video below and share your thoughts in the comment section below.
