This Saturday, June 21, marks the 10th year of International Go Skateboarding Day, and with that, you know Jacksonville is getting involved!

This year the Kona School and Kona Skatepark are bringing Drop Everything & Go Skate Day to Hemming Plaza in what is expected to be a fun-filled day to skate your brains out. From noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, the event has a little something for everyone. From just beginning to skate, or skating on a competitive level, Kona’s Go Skate Day is going to have it.

Drop Everything & Go SkateBoarding Day 2013

On the competition side of things, skate contests include Kona Skatepark’s police-escorted Skate Parade from the Riverside Arts Market to Hemming Plaza, Skate One’s Search for Animal Chin competition and Push Box Race, Sunrise Surf Shop’s Grom Mini-Ramp Jam and Grom Gap, Volcom’s Real Street Best Trick and Vans’ Mini-ramp Jam. Space in the contests is limited and is on a first come, first serve basis. Grom prizes include trophies and prize bags for first through third place and AM Division winners will receive cash prizes.

For the beginners out there, there will be a Family Skate Zone presented by Aqua East Surf Shop that is from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Skate instructors will be giving free lessons and clinics to children, parents and even advanced skaters at a mobile skate park, complete with a kid-size mini-ramp.

There will also be an art class/exhibit that will incorporate art with skating. A collection of hands-on art projects, hosted by The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Jacksonville’s Education Department, will bring the artist out of every skater. Local artist and skateboarder, Chip Southworth, will be there helping out and vibing out with skaters looking to do some art.

Other events throughout the day include a day of local skate movies being shown on the MOCA theatre screen, a live webcast of the entire event, raffle drawings, the Old City Oil Drippers VW Car Show and free motorcycle parking sponsored by Adamec Harley.

In the food department, definitely come with an empty stomach. Eats from the JAX Food Truckies and Burrito Gallery will have everyone’s mouths watering and so will the beers, for those over 21. Domestic pours from Champion Brands as well as a micro-brew festival presented by Brown Distributing Company will be serving up brews for everyone.

Friends celebrate after winning cash in Skate Event.

“Go Skateboarding Day was established in 2004 by the International Association of Skateboarding Companies. It celebrates the exhilaration, creativity and spirit of one of the most influential activities in the world. The Summer Solstice, June 21st, marks this annual homage to drop everything and go skateboarding. For the past three years the City of Jacksonville has embraced this holiday by proclaiming skateboarding to be 100% legal throughout downtown for this one day of the year. Since this year’s event is on a Saturday, extra activities and events are packed into an all-day skateboarding festival. And it’s all free to the public!,” said Laura Phillips-Edgcombe of Kona USA.

Sponsors for the event include: Adamec Harley Davidson, Sunrise Surf Shop, Aqua East, Monster Energy, Vans, Powell Peralta, Bones Wheels, Volcom, Sector 9, Stance Socks, Brown Distribution, Old City Oil Drippers, Burrito Gallery and Kreteswell, Mike Mcintire.
