Local surfer/skateboarder, Trenton “Tarpits” Phillips is ceaseless in his search for creative inspiration. If the waves turn on, he’s most certainly in the water, cross-stepping and hanging heels off the nose of his log or trimming on some manner of alternative craft. When it’s flat, he’s sessioning some unique skate spot befitting of his heavily improvised skate style. In-between, he somehow finds time to pursue an array of original endeavors, creating distinctive music and art in various (heavy) genres and mediums, respectively.

While we are inspired by the guy’s work ethic, we have to ask, “When do you sleep, Tarpits!?”

With the release of two new zines — one of original photographs and another featuring original artwork — Phillips’s varied muses will collide on Thursday, March 29 for a release show at the Hotel Palms in Atlantic Beach. Visual art installations by Phillips and Zoe Larson will be on display. And if he hadn’t yet proved his versatility, Phillips, who prior to playing in his current primitive, blackened sludge metal band, TANSIT, played in the dark synth outfit Burnt Hair, will soundtrack the evening with a noise set or two.

One of the to-be-released zines “My Body // A Vessel” is composed of a collection of photos of churches and power lines captured by Phillips, while the other, “Chi Chi,” includes paintings of the renowned Dragon Ball Z character and notable Princess of Fire Mountain, of the same name.

“I’ve been doing zines for years,” Phillips said. “I really got sparked on the idea of putting whatever you want in a collection of pages. It’s almost like making an album.”

The event is free and both zines will be available for purchase.

In the meantime, you can watch Tarpits’s improvisational prowess in two of his favorite mediums below.
