When someone passes you the aux?
Oooo right now when someone passes me the aux I’m listening to Fin. If anyone knows me I’m always talking about The Internet.* I’ve been following them for years and I actually got to catch Syd’s pop up solo show out here in LA. Long time fan and I’ve been looking up to her for years! This is her first solo record and I love the production on this! The back up vocals and lyrics wow! It’s everything to me right meow.
*Syd, otherwise known as Syd Tha Kid, is a member of the R&B group, The Internet. Fin is her debut solo album.
When you need inspiration?
Erykah Badu: Baduizm
Erykah Badu lordt. She is such a huge inspiration. I mean first of all hair goals. Can y’all not tell! The way she records versus her live performances is something I love to study a lot. She is just so effortlessly cool. I can run this CD front to back and never get tired of it and if she were to put this record out today I know it still would be amazing. She mixes rap and R&B together so well and her words move me to want to make a statement.
When you’re getting ready for a show?
A Tribe Called Quest: The Low End Theory
If you ever get a chance to check out my right arm you will see a cover of this album on my skin! I discovered Tribe in high school and I swear I listened to all their albums for MONTHS. I became obsessed and Low End Theory just stuck with me. The samples! The rhymes! LIKE COME ON MAYNE. My favorite hip-hop song is “Bugging Out” on this album.
When you’re feeling politically frustrated?
Duke Ellington and John Coltrane: Self-Titled
This record just mellows me out and makes me forget everything. “In A Sentimental Mood” is my favorite song ever ever. I took Jazz Studies in high school right before I discovered A Tribe Called Quest. This album is just beautiful. This is the best dynamic duo. I wish people put out more duo albums.
On a night drive?
Corrine Bailey Rae: The Sea
Ooo man this album is so soothing. Her vocals on this record just blow me away. She put this album out after her husband died and you can just feel her pain. I remember actually going to the store and buying this record as soon as it came out. It was my senior year of high school. I love listening to it at night because from start to finish, I just feel like I’m in a dream.
