The UNF Surf Team returned home from Cali with a second place finish overall at the 2017 NSSA Collegiate National Competition. Corey Howell has back-to-back first place finishes in the College Men’s division (for the first time in history) and Emily Rupert comes home with her second College Women’s first place finish. Hunter Roland finished fourth overall in College Men’s, and the family here at Void would like to congratulate everyone for such a stellar performance, and we’d also like to thank you guys and gals for showing Cali what the Florida surfers can bring. Yewww!

I called a secret meeting at an undisclosed location (Ryan Alkhatab’s place off 2nd South) to hear some stories from the trip:

✪ Pat’s board bag was too long, so he had to drive back to RJ’s at 5 a.m. to drop off his board, schedule a new flight, and ended up renting some PoS longboard once he finally made it out to Cali.

✪ Brett (back up surfer) was honored by the airline gods — they lost his board bag. He got to film everyone else for the first few days. Once it got to him, he slept in it. I’m assuming because he didn’t want to lose it again.

✪ RJ burned his mouth on some scalding-hot tea, raged hard on the beach and may have interrupted the winner’s speech with a loud and boisterous “Let’s get f*&!ed up!”

✪ Piper said all of Corey’s stretching made her too loose. So, I don’t want to say don’t stretch, but Piper might.

✪ Ryan failed to call shotgun the entire trip and was left sitting in a death trap in the back of the van with fins in his face from all directions. Any mishap on the driver’s end could’ve left Ryan faceless, and boy does he have a pretty face.

✪ Emily couldn’t find the secret location of the meeting, so I really can’t tell you her side of the story, but she won, so that should count for something right?

✪ Corey had multiple moments of glory:

  1. He fell asleep with his shock therapy on.
  2. He got his knee stuck in a fence.
  3. He was allegedly seen stretching Ryan out on the beach (if you haven’t seen Corey stretch one of his mates out, I’ll just say it looks pretty … intimate).
  4. He also won his division.

✪ Hunter saw a beautiful sunrise from the plane that Pat missed, and he also came in fourth overall. Which, in my opinion, is pretty sick because a few months ago he was in a full arm cast after shattering his arm bone (I don’t know which one) trying to bomb a hill.

All and all, it was a good trip. The team ripped, and they have plans to return next year and finally take that first place finish.
