Hola Gaston! Tropical Storm Gaston Has formed in the Atlantic, and is on a northwest trek a little bit away from our ultimate swell window. However, he has 99L in tow, and there are some interesting scenarios in play that could bring some solid waves to North Florida!

Here’s the stats. After an impressive growth spurt earlier on Tuesday, Tropical Storm Gaston continued to pack top-sustained winds of 65 mph as of the 5 p.m. from NHC. An eye-like feature has intermittently appeared within Gaston during the day on Tuesday. Located far out in the eastern Atlantic at 14.2°N, 35.8°W, Gaston is now projected to become a strong Category 1 hurricane before it encounters several days of strong wind shear (above 20 knots). Beyond that point, it could strengthen even further as it passes over subtropical SSTs that will be 1 to 2°C above average for this time of year. Fortunately, Gaston’s northwestward path will keep it many hundreds of miles from any land area for at least the next several days, and it is likely to recurve long before approaching North America or even Bermuda.

The last lingering front across the U.S. along with Fiona, are steering the current storms. Our nor’easter front is still on the horizon, getting sucked into the approach as a long shot of Gaston, but even more so for 99L. We should have building windswell/groundswell mix from the NE into the waist-to-chest-high range building the rest of the week and into the weekend. Not perfect, but it’s not flat! Wax ’em up and get ready for some waves and a couple degrees of cool down. Maxing tides with the current moon phase should make things interesting!
