Jacksonville has a storied musical history, primarily because of a handful of Southern Rock superstars who emerged from the beach town decades ago. Recently, a number of well-known indie and traditional rock groups have formed in Jacksonville and the surrounding areas. And, that local talent needs somewhere to hone their craft and record albums. Below is a list of some of the top recording studios in Jacksonville, in no particular order.
A1A Audio Productions
A1A Audio Productions is a full-service audio production facility located in Jacksonville Beach. With the latest equipment and highly experienced engineers, A1A Audio Productions ensures artfully mastered recordings. The experience includes the most talented music engineers, studio musicians, and music productions for many major regional events such as the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and the Beaches Town Center’s, Dancing in the Streets festival. Their sounds engineers are top-notch professionals who have worked with artists such as Alicia Keys and Ludacris, as well as broadcast networks such as MTV and Oxygen. A1A has recently completed building a “live room” that was five years in the making and was designed to record bands live. They specialize in ADR, sound design for television and film, mixing, mastering, and artist development.
Mighty Music Group
Founded in 2010 by Christopher Royden Myers and Ryan Viti, Mighty Music Group (MMG) began with a goal to provide an innovative approach to the production and songwriting process. Based in Jacksonville Beach the studio features a state-of-the-art mic locker and high-end audio software and equipment. MMG’s services include artist training, recording, songwriting, producing, voice overs, and voice and guitar lessons. But, what really distinguishes MMG from other recording studios in the area is that they have the ability to assist with artist development, including assembly of artist’s media packages and establishing their brand. Although they work with major labels, Mighty Music Group strives to help the independent local artist get to the next level through brand development, MMG productions have been secured by such notables as the Atlanta Falcons and the Florida Boy Intertainment (FBI) label, and YouTube phenom, Carson Lueders. Their work has been featured on Keyshia Cole’s “Woman to Woman” album, PerezHilton.com, and PopstarOnline.com.
Twin Hill Studio
Walter Hill and Jonathan Berlin run Twin Hill Studio out of a new 1,500-square-foot space on Mayport Road in Atlantic Beach. The dynamic recording studio, founded in 2012, not only offers recording, mixing and mastering, but also vinyl short runs and master lacquers for record pressing. “Twin Hill is set up to facilitate a client’s entire production, starting at the initial recording stage, all the way to the final packaging of their order, ready for the consumer,” said Hill. Twin Hill operates the only functional record lathe in the South East, with the next closest being in Nashville at United Pressing and at Jack White’s Third Man Records.
My Platinum Sound
Owned by Paul Lapinski, My Platinum Sound (MPS) has been serving the music community in Northeast Florida and Southern Georgia for almost two decades. MPS has worked with some of the biggest names in the business including Alicia Keys, J Dash, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (RJA), as well as Disney. Lapinski, who is also the chief engineer at MPS has received Platinum certification with J Dash’s “WOP” and Gold certification with The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus’ “Face Down.” Located in Jacksonville Beach, My Platinum Sound is sought out by major and indie labels and welcomes all genres of music.
It is clear that there is anything but a shortage of musical talent that calls Jacksonville home, and while it is easy for us to mostly identify with the big names we hear on the radio, we can’t forget about the people behind the scenes whose talents should not go unnoticed. These four studios are a testament to that.
