Professional soccer returned to Jacksonville, fl last Wednesday night as Mexican sides Tigres de la UANL took on Cruz Azul at Everbank Field. The two Liga MX sides put on a show for the crowd of 4,237 that came out to watch the two clubs battle it out.
The beautiful game was alive and well in the bold city on this night.
After a scoreless first half, Midfielder Manuel Viniegra gave Tigres the lead when he tapped home a deflected Hugo Villa shot. Then a few minutes later veteran Mexican International Carlos Salcido blasted a long range volley to secure the 2-1 win over Tigres.
The lone goal for Cruz Azul was scored from the penalty spot in the 80th minute by Teofilo Guierrez.
This night of soccer was another stepping stone for the Sunshine Soccer Group who is on a mission to bring a professional soccer team to North Florida.
“We’re going to try to attract the best teams in the world to come play here in Jacksonville,” – Mark Frisch, Chief executive officer of the Sunshine Group.
The group hope to organize several additional matches with the next eight months.
