When I’m not lurking around the Void office, drinking all of their coffee and complaining about their musical choices, I like to bring my computer out to various spots around Jax Beach (mostly coffee shops) to try to get some writing done. My favorite spot used to be Lillie’s (RIP) and I’ve been trying to find a decent replacement for it. Here are my rankings of some of the places I have tried out.

Panera

This place gets way overcrowded some days and for some reason, people think it’s a great idea to bring their shrieking children here. Whether you’re just having lunch with a friend or trying to meet a deadline, the amount of crying babies and occasional presence of old people having loud semi-racist conversations is too much for me. They have decent food, okay coffee and good internet, but it’s not enough to cope with the noise and the fight for a table.

Bold Bean

My new favorite place to be. It’s pretty small and there isn’t always a table available inside, but it rarely gets too noisy. Most of the other patrons are also working on their laptops whenever I’m there and everybody keeps it at a respectful level. They also have really good coffee (and beer if it’s been that kind of day). The internet works well and the employees are friendly and seem to actually like being there.

Starbucks

It’s louder than Bold Bean, but mainly from the sounds of complicated frozen beverages being created. The coffee ranges from okay to not great, depending on what you get. It’s not worth the price if you can get a way better cup elsewhere for the same amount of money. The internet works well though and there’s room to spread out, so it’s a decent second choice if there’s no place to sit at Bold Bean.

The Beach

The beach is a fine choice if you’re going analog and writing with a pen and paper, but bringing expensive technology here is iffy. There’s also generally no internet unless you jump on the unsecured connection of some nearby house. That can be good though, if you’re trying to go distraction-free. If you’re far enough away from the Jax Beach Pier, it’s hardly ever crowded and the sound of the ocean is pleasant in the background. You’ll have to bring your own coffee of course. The biggest drawback is the birds. Don’t even think about bringing a snack with you because they always know, and you can never outrun them. Never.
