Local legends Evan Thompson and Jay Dodson take the win at the 14th Annual Tommy Tant Memorial Surf Classic.
High tide and big waves set the stage for three of the top east coast surfers to impress the crowd with their tow at skills. This team format created a unique angle for the jet ski driver, who had to maneuver through the rough conditions and played a major role in the competition. Drivers were tasked to find the perfect wave for their teammate to capture big air and pull off their best trick.
The action packed day included over 2,000 spectators who gathered around Flagler Pier to cheer on the teams as they pushed the limits of their sport. The harsh water conditions set the tone for the day as a board was broken in half in the first set. This serious level of competition nature tested the pro teams to push their limits out on the water.
It was Jacksonville Beach natives Evan Thompson and his jet ski driver Jay Dodson who dominated the best trick of the contest with a big stock air with indy grab. Thompson and Dodson defeated the Heilman brothers Jesse and Markus along with the team made up of Blake Jones and Jeremy Saukel, scoring a 5.33 out of 10. “I’m really happy to win,” surfer Thompson stated. “I knew this would be hard. My teammate Jay found the right spot, and I got lucky and just landed good enough to win.”
This is the fourth year Red Bull has hosted a tow at format event at Flagler Beach as part of the Tommy Tant Memorial Surf Classic presented by Nautica, and this years event was a tremendous success!
