It’s time for another installment of Read a F***ing Book, where I tell you to turn off your stupid phone (you know, unless it’s an eBook) and put your brain to good use.

This week, I’m reading #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso. You might know her as the Founder and former CEO of Nasty Gal, the hugely popular online clothing store. This combination of memoir and business guidebook tells the story of her unusually quick rise from an unemployed anti-capitalist high school dropout to the head of a multi-million dollar fashion empire. She intersperses her personal tale of success with helpful tips and important lessons to help you, the reader, become your own badass #GIRLBOSS no matter where you are in life.

So far, I am enjoying the book, but taking her advice with a grain of salt. Amoruso was criticized last year and stepped down as CEO after a former employee sued Nasty Gal over allegedly firing her for getting pregnant. The company’s Glassdoor page paints an unpleasant picture of the work environment and there are a number of scathing reviews from former employees who are not happy with the way they were treated there. This goes against so many of the things Amoruso mentioned in her book, so it’s unclear whether she is the best resource for business advice.

In spite of all that, it is still an interesting book and an encouraging tale of a weirdo underdog conquering the business world and forging her own path to the top. I’d recommend it for any fellow weirdo underdogs who need a good dose of girl power.
