Earlier this morning, Kendrick Lamar released his first single in two years since the highly acclaimed album, good kid, m.A.A.d city. The track, titled “i,” feels a lot like some of Kendrick’s earlier work, such as Overly Dedicated, the rapper’s fourth mixtape that was released in 2010. K.Dot and producer Columbus Smith (known as Rahki) sample the Isley Brother’s famous song, “That Lady,” and seem to draw a lot of influence from Charles Hamilton and The Beastie Boys.
While the track has received some mixed reviews so far online, I am personally a fan of King Kendrick’s latest single. While no one can argue the excellence of 2012’s good kid, m.A.A.d city, this track takes me back to when I first discovered K.Dot way back in late 2010, and for this hip-hop fan, I simply cannot wait to see what Lamar’s new album will bring to the table.
Listen to the new single below and judge for yourself.
