It has been awhile since we’ve had a real week of true lull in surf this spring, but this may be the week that you might have to dust off the log or the SUP if you predominately ride a short board. If you don’t own one, it might be time to invest in a small wave board for the smaller wave season ahead. The recent “omega block” is still sitting up in the northern Midwest forcing some dominant high pressure systems to steer warm Gulf air in the plains while dipping the jet stream. Although we just had a decently sized front roll through over the course of the last few days, we’re only getting the very tippy tail end of it. We’re looking at a slight dip in temperature come Friday too, which always seems to sneak a last gas into April and May every year.

Until we see a true shift in the jet-stream over the course of the month, we may be stuck daydreaming of Kelly Slater opening his first wave pool in his home state! You can find a little wave at the right place at the right time this week if you really want to get on the water, but the offshore winds will dominate at times and may make it barely ridable. At least this will give you ample time to get the last-minute shopping done on some great Mother’s Day gifts. Even if mom doesn’t surf, our local surf shops have loads of great gift ideas for Mom!
