In the United States, the burger is the American staple. It’s served everywhere from casual dining to the most upscale establishments. But when Void challenged the readers of North Florida to let us know which place is their favorite to grab a burger, the debate turned heated.

With almost 700 votes (200 alone were write-in ballots) we came away with a clear winner.

And that winner, with an impressive 93 write-in votes, was Fernandina’s own Tasty’s Burgers and Fries.

Owner Kathy Dougherty opened Tasty’s back in December of 2011. Having lived in Fernandina for most of her life, she decided to open a burger restaurant simply because as she put it: “Who doesn’t love a good burger?”

“We knew there was a need for a good burger place and we wanted to recreate that old-school burger joint that people of all ages could enjoy,” she explained. “We aren’t over the top trendy with what we do, we aren’t the prettiest building on the block, but we put a lot of love and care into our product. It’s simple, but good.”

Most of the staff at Tasty’s hails from Fernandina as well, including head chef, Justin Southwell. They hear the comparison to Five Guys quite frequently and while Dougherty admits there are similar techniques and products, the staff is really what sets Tasty’s apart from the rest.

“Our best-selling burger hands-down is the Classic Tasty. We’ve found that most people know the way they like their burgers and they generally tend to stick with it,” said Dougherty. “We do have other specialty burgers that do very well. The Shrimp Burger (Friday’s only) will usually sell out and our Bison Burger (Wednesday only) is a huge hit. If you’ve never been to Tasty’s we will always suggest you start with the Classic Tasty.

“At Tasty’s our goal is the whole package, not just the burger. I believe that customer service is king and great food is queen. But that’s not saying that the food comes second, it just means the people come first always. What makes our burger different is hands down, the people cooking it.”

Having a single Tasty’s location doesn’t bother Dougherty. If anything, it ensures what customers get is perfect every time.

“Maybe we’ll open another location soon, but it’s not our goal. Our goal is to focus on perfecting what we got.”

You can find Tasty’s at 710 Centre St. in historic downtown Fernandina Beach.
