Hurricane Matthew, currently a category 4 major storm, has been brewing in the heart of the Caribbean for days. At one point, he reached Category 5 strength. Now, this storm poses a major threat to our island neighbors as the path looks to thread the needle between Jamaica, Hispaniola and PR before it mows through the Bahamas.

Matthew is the strongest storm on record since Hurricane Felix in 2007, with sustained winds of 150 mph, gusts up to 185 mph and moving at a snail’s pace NW at 5 mph. After gaining some freakish strength on Friday, he was downgraded to Category 4, and as he makes his way slowly northward, he will likely lessen in strength to a Category 2 once in our swell window for North Florida. This is still nothing to be taken for granted, as this storm will wreak havoc along the way, and at any given time, could take a turn for the better or worse. Most models show Matthew making its way up the coast towards Hatteras by the end of next week.

As for the surf, it’s going to get BIG, really BIG! We have the spots that can hold this surf, but this is not the time to charge if you aren’t experienced in these conditions because this will be a hurricane swell and a macking nor’easter one-two punch. We will see constantly building surf in the waist-to-chest-high range through the week until the main event Thursday, Friday and hopefully a cleanup day next Saturday! We’re talking overhead to double overhead surf in North Florida! We will watch the swell models closely as this storm progresses and keep you up-to-date on the swell models over the next couple of days, because things are going to get interesting! GO JAGS!
