This Saturday, May 17, the 29th annual Hugh Shaw Memorial Surf Classic will be taking place at St Augustine Beach.
The contest is an annual event in which surfers and Flagler Alumni alike compete in a longboard contest in memory of deceased Flagler Alumni Hugh Shaw, who tragically passed away in the spring of 1983 at the ripe age of 23.
The friendly fundraising competition commemorates Shaw’s love of long boarding, while raising money for the Hugh Shaw College Scholarship.
Shaw and his friends attended Flagler College in the early 1980’s and helped bring the surf scene to the college that is now known for its surfing reputation. Every year Shaw’s friends and family, along with the Flagler College Alumni Relations Office put together the contest to bring everyone together not only in the memory of Shaw’s life, but to bring together a community of Flagler Surf Alumni that spans over three decades.
The event first started back in 1983, in the fall following Shaw’s death. Shaw’s family has worked with the Flagler Alumni Relations Office for years to develop the surfing contest into a family-friendly beach day. The contest is usually a part of Flagler College Alumni Weekend. Competition is open to students, faculty, staff and alumni of Flagler College who wish to compete.
It is a fun-filled event that consists of surfing, barbecue, memories, smiles and sunshine and although the event hasn’t drawn a huge crowd over the past years, it is open to the public and company is always welcome. The more the merrier!
So, if you are in St Augustine this weekend and you are in the mood to watch some surf and catch some rays make it down to the Hugh Shaw Memorial Surf Contest and soak it all up!
