The Jaguars are unlike any other team in the NFL, where the majority of our fanbase is female (51 percent). We’re one of eight franchises with an official women’s club and if you look around at the stadium on game day, proof of a growing female fan base is evident.
As the ladies continue to show up to support the Jags, it’s important to note key aspects of the culture to assist newbies into becoming better fans. As someone who’s grown up with the team and been a season ticket holder for quite some time, Void asked that I share the game day culture I’ve come to know and love.
Embrace the Tailgate Culture
Tailgating for a football game almost always involves eating, drinking and playing outdoors in the elements. But these three things can have a direct effect on how well you enjoy the game itself.
To start the day off right, grab the essentials to avoid being labeled as that person who shows up empty-handed to a tailgate. The essentials include something to eat, something to drink, plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat.
Of course you can expand on the essentials as much as you prefer. But, if you have the bare necessities, you’ll be able to survive game day in the Florida elements, where it can range from being brutally hot in the parking lot to a torrential downpour inside the stadium.
Wear Your Colors with Pride
With teal, black and animal print to choose from, the Jaguars have one of the best color schemes for game day outfits in all of sports.
While a go-to shirt with the official logo is always a solid choice, try mixing it up with options from local boutiques for handmade jewelry and one-of-a-kind outfits. Not only does this show unique support for the team, but you’re also supporting the local economy and the craftsmen and buyers who cater to this fan base.
Avoid Becoming a BagWire
Part of being a sports fan is supporting your team no matter what. Despite what spoiled college fans will have you believe, staying atop the best league in the world with the best players is nearly impossible. Therefore it’s important to support your team proudly, in good times and bad.
Don’t be one of those people who shows up to Jaguars games with a bag over their head. I don’t care if the team is winless. If you have a ticket, you should be there for support. Fan support has a tremendous effect on the players and their performance and they feed off your energy. Yes, the team has been far from the best the last few years, but there is hope for the future with one of the youngest teams in the NFL.
Stand tall, cheer loud and save your boos for the refs and the opposition.
It Could Always Be Worse
We could have owners like the Titans, Jets, Browns and Raiders. We don’t. Jaguars owner Shad Khan is arguably one of the coolest in all of sports, and one that gave us pools and scoreboards bigger than two 747 jets.
Do these amenities distract us from the losing? Sure. But would you rather sit with 100-degree heat beating down on you while needing binoculars to check the clock on scoreboards made for ants? Didn’t think so. Khan invests in the city, the stadium and controls what he can control while leaving the football decisions up to his guys. That’s more than you can ask from any NFL owner.
If you listen to the first piece of this advice and tailgate properly, the fun you’ll have in the stadium with giant scoreboards takes care of itself thanks to the people you surround yourself with.
