George Jung was released from prison after serving almost 20 years behind bars. He was released on June 7, from FCI Fort Dix, a federal prison in New jersey. Some of you might be wondering who George Jung is. Well, he is quite an interesting fellow with a famous background.

George Jung is most commonly known as the man portrayed by Johnny Depp in the blockbuster film, “Blow.” The movie is based around Jung, a longtime smuggler made famous by the 2001 film, who belonged to the Medellín Cartel and was involved with close to 90 percent of the cocaine smuggled into the U.S. during the sixties and seventies. He was Pablo Escobar’s number one American distributor, the self-proclaimed “coke star” of America.

“I was a guy who had a lot of money and unlimited access to cocaine and even if I looked like Bela Lugosi, I still had the most beautiful women on the planet because everybody at that time, especially women, were in love with cocaine and of course in love with the money–the access to the automobiles, the clothes, the dinners, the lifestyle,” Jung said in a PBS exclusive interview. “Basically I was no different than a rock star or a movie star. I was a coke star.”

Jung was a pretty big marijuana dealer before being locked up in prison for cocaine. He started bringing pot up from Mexico in single-engine planes to the United States. While in prison for pot, he made connections that eventually led to him smuggling cocaine with the Medellín Cartel.

“One day I realized that I had crossed a line. I was an outlaw and I liked it. I loved it! I wasn’t in love with the money anymore. I was in love with being an outlaw, and I couldn’t stop,” Jung said.

He was later caught by the DEA again, this time for cocaine, and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Jung is now 72 years old and back on the streets as a free citizen of America. Now that he is free, he will be under authority surveillance through parole and probation, for the next eight years.

“Johnny Depp literally blew my mind. It was me,” Jung said about the film. “He literally became me.”

“Blow” has gone down in history as one of the most memorable performances of Johnny Depp’s career, and because of that, George Jung will forever be in the minds of movie fans around the world.
