Your monthly batch of some of the best shows coming to the area. If you don’t attend at least one … expect some serious FOMO.
September 9 – Gwar @ Freebird Live
Heavy metal collective, GWAR, are most well-known for their outrageous Sci-Fi-esque costumes and stage designs, which revolve around the group’s mythology as interplanetary barbarians. The band is comprised of an ever-changing lineup of musicians, artists and filmmakers who rotate around, collectively known as Slave Pit Inc. If all of this sounds a little too out there for you, consider the fact that GWAR has sold nearly a million records in the U.S. to date. Whether you’re drawn by their acclaim or controversy, this is one show you’ll never forget. Tickets are $20. Doors open at 7 p.m.
September 12 – Rich Homie Quan @ Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena
Atlanta-based rapper, Rich Homie Quan, or Dequantes Lamar, has been rapping for only four years, though the 25-year-old has already made a name for himself in the crowded genre. Lamar, who is also quite possibly the biggest Jags fan in the hip-hop world, has released several stunning singles, such as “Type of Way” and “Flex,” which have landed him awards like Best New Artist in last year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards show. You can be almost certain that Rich Homie Quan will be rocking a Jaguars jersey when he performs. Tickets are about $30 and the show starts at 7 p.m.
September 15 – Thee Oh Sees @ St. Augustine Amphitheatre
The wide-ranging rock band Thee Oh Sees originally began as a side project for frontman John Dwyer, but after seeing some commercial success early on, and luckily for us, they became a full fledged group. Formed in 1997, Thee Oh Sees have been cranking out albums at a voracious pace, with countless numbers of albums, EPs, 7-inch records and other forms of release. Despite their large discography, Dwyer and company continue to surprise fans and please critics. With their own style of psychedelic/garage rock, Thee Oh Sees are a concert that everyone should have on their calendar. You can pick up a ticket for under $20. Doors open at 7 p.m.
September 29 – Dr. Dog and Swimm @ Freebird Live
Dr. Dog are back in town again and will be performing at Freebird Live in Jax Beach on Tuesday, September 29. The indie rock band is currently touring with their latest album, Live at a Flamingo Hotel, which was released earlier this year in January. Playing alongside Dr. Dog is local favorite, Swimm, who are making their second appearance in town in just a few short month, thankfully. The duo, comprised of Adam Winn and Chris Hess, have just released their latest EP, titled, Beverly Hills, and if you haven’t checked it out yet, listen to it here, via Bandcamp. Tickets for this one are only $22 in advance, so get them early. Doors open at 8 p.m.
