Presented by Mellow Mushroom and powered by VoidLive.com, the 5th annual Kona Pro Jax Surf and Paddle Challenge took place over the weekend at the Jacksonville Beach Pier in front of thousands of spectators. New Smyrna Beach’s Evan Geiselman, took home $3,000 for first place while scoring the first ever perfect 10 on his way to victory. Geiselman took down top notch competitors from as far away as New Jersey, Brazil and Costa Rica.

Solid chest to head-high surf was seen throughout the contest weekend giving some of the world’s top talent a great platform to showcase their skill and battle it out for a piece of the $13,000 cash purse. While the conditions were optimal for surfing, it proved to be challenging for the contestants in this years newest addition, the SUP and Waveski Paddle Challenge. While paddle sports usually require calmer waters, the contestants rose to the challenge by braving the tough Nor’easter conditions with Ty Miller paddling his way to victory in the SUP challenge and Joey Civello winning the Waveski paddle event.

In other divisions, Jacksonville Beach native Tristan Thompson edged out South Florida’s Luke Marks for an impressive 1st place finish in the Flomotion Jr Pro. This is Thompson’s first major contest win at his home break. The local surfers continued to dominate in the Tacolu Women’s Pro when Piper Austin took home the 1st place trophy with a dominating performance.

Contest Director Jay Dodson, said “This year’s Kona Pro is the best turnout we’ve ever had. The weather was a little rough at first but once the sun came out on Sunday, we were all rewarded with some great action in the water.”

Dodson continued, “The additions of SUP, Waveski and Women’s Pro added to the unique diversity of the Kona Pro which gave the photographers who lined the pier and spectators on the beach plenty of entertainment throughout the weekend.”

In addition to the contest, donations were collected to benefit the Eddie Guilbeau cancer fund, a well-known aspiring pro East Coast surfer who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Between the crowd, competitors and local businesses, over $2,200 was raised to help with Guilbeau’s cancer treatment. In an overwhelming act of kindness and support, local surfer and respected business owner, Greg Saig, stepped up to match the crowd’s donations.

“This donation is a true testament of how tight-knit the North Florida surf community is. When someone in our circle is going through a rough time, it’s great to see the community respond to help in whatever way we can” said Dodson.
