The Players tournament is once again underway after Thursday’s electrifying scoring rounds from the world’s top golfers.
The earlier tee times proved to be beneificial on Thursday as golfers took advantage of soft conditions and low winds on TPC Sawgrass’ Stadium Course. In fact, golfers in the morning rounds averaged a shot and a half better than the afternoon wave.
“The golf course is sitting there defenseless,” said Brandel Chamblee from Golf Channel/NBC, “as a dart board in an Irish Bar on St. Patty’s Day.”
The best field in golf was led by World No. 1 Jason Day who shot a bogey-free 9-under-par round. The 28-year-old Australian has not had any success in the years past at TPC Sawgrass, but his opening round 63 is bound to turn that around. Day was one of eight players in the field to have a bogey-free round.
Local Jacksonville residents Russell Knox, Billy Horschel and Jonas Blixt fired rounds of 68, 68 and 67 respectively, to land them in the Top 25. Local golf hero and U.S. Open Champion Jim Furyk shot a round of 71 (-1).
Friday is set to have cooler temperatures than Thursday but with light rain expected in the afternoon, it is sure to bring heavier winds into the equation.
