Jacksonville native Addison Zawada made his Duval roots proud last Friday (6/26) in NYC when he took home first place in the Red Bull Mini Drome. This cycling race was unique, however, in that it took place in a figure-eight-shaped course, as opposed to the traditional circle. The mini velodrome meant that the 64 racers taking place in the event, both individually and in teams, would be hitting curves as steep as 45 degrees in top speeds.

In the individual competition, Zawada, Jacksonville’s only Red Bull athlete, took on 32 other individual competitors. He edged out other racers Matt Locasicio and Matt Reyes en route to the first place finish. He later said that winning the competition, “really means the world to me.” The $1,000 prize probably didn’t hurt either.

Zawada has certainly made Jacksonville proud, and is just another prime example of First Coast locals who are making big waves in the sports world.
