January 10 – Silversun Pickups @ Ponte Vedra Concert Hall
Starting off the New Year strong is a great night of indie rock with Silversun Pickups performing at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall on Sunday, January 10. The band, who released their fourth studio album, Better Nature, in September, have typically been well received by fans and critics alike, with Better Nature being different. Attendees should expect a mixture of old Silversun favorites like “Panic Switch” and “Lazy Eye,” as well as a lot of new material from their latest album. Tickets are roughly $30 and the doors open around 8 p.m.
January 15 – Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue @ Ponte Vedra Concert Hall
Trombone Shorty, whose real name is actually Troy Andrews, is a bit of a jazz legend, which is odd, considering that he is just 29 years old. At the young age of 6, Andrews was already a bandleader in New Orleans. At 19, he was touring with Lenny Kravitz. Those seeking
something a bit different than the usual should check this one out, just prepare yourself for a heaping dose of funk. These tickets will cost you a bit more than some concerts at about $42, but a great night of funky jazz will be well worth the pricetag. Doors open at 8 p.m.
January 16 – Sidereal @ Freebird Live
Local reggae-rock group Sidereal, who is no stranger to this soon-to-be-closed venue, will be performing at Freebird Live on Saturday, January 16. When asked about the venue’s closure, the band said, “We are sad that the venue we grew up playing and attending shows at is closing, but [we] are trying to look at the change in a positive light. Hopefully, with the void for a live music venue (other than Lynch’s!) in the area, something new will pop up to take Freebird’s place. Thankfully, we still have the Ponte Vedra Music Hall and Seawalk Pavilion …” The band has had hundreds of experiences with Freebird since their inception, whether performing or seeing other artists perform there, stating, “Two of our most memorable shows would be from June 2013, when we opened for the Dirty Heads and The Expendables for a sold-out room, closing out our first national tour. The other would be our first sell-out as a headliner at Freebird in July of 2014.” Sidereal hopes to see both old and new faces on Saturday (the 16th) and give attendees the opportunity to celebrate a great era of live music in Jacksonville Beach. With other great locals Greenhouse Lounge, Hours Eastly and N.W. Izzard, you should definitely mark this one down on your list of must-see shows. “We can’t wait to see you all at the bird one last time!”
January 20 – Galactic @ Freebird Live
This is the one you should attend if you’ve only got enough time or cash to make a single concert this month, because well … Freebird won’t be around after the doors close following the Galactic show on Wednesday, January 20. Galactic, who have been performing at Freebird for several years now, are an excellent reason to attend in their own right, so regardless if you even care about the closure of the venue, you should still be there when one of Jacksonville Beach’s music landmarks goes out with a bang. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the tickets will run you $25.
